Revised classification of anonymous mycobacteria TABLE

Three methods for the laboratory classification of mycobacteria have been proposed. Runyon (1955) used pigment production and rate of growth to define four groups (numbered 1 to 4). Collins (1962) employed growth at 20°C. and 44°C., resistance to thiosemicarbazone, and growth in a synthetic medium to describe four similar groups (assemblies A to D). Marks and Richards (1963) used morphological,...

Role of Anonymous Mycobacteria in Pathogenesis of Human Tuberculosis

During the last few years a number of reports have appeared in literature regarding isolation of mycobacteria from patients of tuberculosis, which were different in several respects from the well known Mycobacterium tuberculosis hominis or bovis. (Buhler and Pollak, 1953, Tempe and Runyon, 1954. Nassau and Hamilton, 1957, Davis, et al, 1966). These Mycobacteria have been designated as “Anonymou...

Molecular Identification of Rare Clinical Mycobacteria by Application of 16S-23S Spacer Region Sequencing

Objective(s) In addition to several molecular methods and in particular 16S rDNA analysis, the application of a more discriminatory genetic marker, i.e., 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer gene sequence has had a great impact on identification and classification of mycobacteria. In the current study we aimed to apply this sequencing power to conclusive identification of some Iranian clinical ...

Use of thiosemicarbazone and para-nitrobenzoic acid in screening tests for anonymous mycobacteria.

In screening for anonymous mycobacteria the use of thiosemicarbazone (10mug./ml.) may give rise to false positive results. Although these can usually be overcome by further tests, additional time and effort is required, which seriously limits the value of thiosemicarbazone as a true screening agent. Para-nitrobenzoic acid (500 mug./ml.) has proved more satisfactory in our hands; no false positi...
